Chives make a wonderful fresh garnish and a little goes a long way. So they’re the perfect herb to have to hand — snip a little perfectly fresh when you need it.
Chives grow well indoors with enough light. Read on for our recommendations on the ideal grow lights for a healthy happy plant.

Chives Light Requirements

Chives may go dormant with shorter days — so keep the light hours up.

Chives plants will thrive under lights that provide:

15

20

 DLI

DLI (Daily Light Integral) is how we measure amounts of “plant-useful” light. Once we know a plant’s DLI needs we can match it to the ideal grow light setup.

Day Length for Chives

Best Grow Lights for Chives

You’ll need a fairly powerful light to provide 20-30 DLI in a 16 hour period. The Bright Grow recommendations:
  1. GE PAR38 balanced grow bulb. Hang the bulb about 15 inches above the plant’s leaves. This will give you a circle of light 10 inches across that’s just the right amount of bright.

  2. The GE 24″ LED Fixture is also a decent bet. Hang the fixture just 4 inches above the plant’s leaf canopy. This will give a strip of optimal light directly underneath the fixture.

Chives, like other leafy plants, will thrive under a balanced full-spectrum light.

Balanced full-spectrum lights provide roughly equal amount of red and blue wavelengths while still appearing white to our eyes.

High Output fluorescent or LED grow lights will both work well for growing Chives.

Temperature for Chives

Cooler temperatures help to avoid flowering and keep the leaves tasty.

Germination:

Growth:

Many plants germinate at lower temperatures and prefer more warmth for their growth. This is how plants have evolved — sprouting early in the spring when the days are cool and growing and producing as the days get longer and warmer.
